Installing a S-10 T-5 five-speed transmission in a flathead 6-powered Dodge or Plymouth Truck with a truck style bellhousing
- Press fit the enclosed bronze pilot bushing into the rear of the crankshaft. This bushing fits the nose of the T-5 to the opening in the crank. (Figure 1). Make sure to remove the old pilot bushing before trying to install the bushing in the kit.
- Press fit the enclosed, larger bushing into the standard Mopar throw-out bearing. (Figure 1 & 2).
You may need to heat the enclosed thin ring over the front bearing retainer of the T-5. This insures and exact alignment of the T-5 transmission into the original bellhousing.
DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP! 5th gear failure will result! (Figure 3).
- Drill and Tap four new holes into your original TRUCK bellhousing to match the four mounting holes on the T-5. Use a transfer punch to locate these holes.
- Enlarge the opening in the center brace of the TRUCK frame to accommodate the larger T-5 tail shaft.
- Attached a compatible T-5 universal joint yoke in the mounted transmission and measure u-joint to u-joint centers to have a new driveshaft made (or you can use your existing driveshaft with a new front yoke welded to it to match the T-5 u-joint).
- Final "clean-up" include a new wooden or metal floorboard to accommodate the shifter location and create a new longer shifter handle then add a shifter boot to cover the hole.
